Gum recession and treatment

Dr Ion Zabalegui is a pioneer in the development of microsurgical techniques for the treatment of gum recession. The results achieve a significant aesthetic change, all through a simple and painless technique.

One of the most common reasons for consultation related to smile aesthetics is noticing that the gums are higher (on the upper teeth) or lower (on the lower teeth), which is called gum recession.

The aesthetic effect is teeth that appear longer than the adjacent teeth. This recession may also be accompanied by sensitivity to cold and heat, inflammation of that area of the gums, and pain when chewing or brushing.

The most common cause of gum recession is inadequate brushing, either due to excessive or too intense brushing, or due to insufficient brushing, resulting in bacterial inflammation that can lead to gum recession.

Treatment of gum recession

The treatment aims to identify and eliminate the cause of the recession as well as cover the recession. It is a simple and painless microsurgical technique called palatal connective tissue grafting.

The success of the treatment is related to the cause that originated it and the technique used to cover the recession. Studies related to this indicate that treatments with grafts obtained from the patient’s own palatal mucosa achieve the highest success rate, both in terms of the level of coverage achieved and the number of teeth that achieve total coverage of their exposed root. We are pioneers in this field and in 1999 we described the technique for covering exposed roots in multiple adjacent teeth. Currently, the incorporation of regenerative proteins derived from enamel (EMDOGAIN®) added to connective tissue graft treatment is revealing results that are even superior to those achieved with palatal mucosa grafting alone. These are advanced periodontal techniques that we also use in some complex cases of dental implant placement.

Treatment with ‘Ad Modum’ palate grafts described by Zabalegui et al., performed on a patient with very long teeth who wants to have normal-sized teeth.
