Acute gingivitis
Acute necrotising ulcerative gingivitis (ANUG) is an acute infection of the gums that manifests as pain in the gums affecting a large area of the mouth.
It is a more common condition than it seems, and we treat it regularly at our dental clinic in Bilbao. The onset is sudden, so it is important to be alert to the symptoms:
- Spontaneous bleeding
- Loss of the wavy shape of the gums, which become whitish in colour (necrosis of the gum tissue) and flatten out.
- Pus or discharge
- Bad breath (halitosis)
- Occasionally accompanied by fever

The relationship between gingivitis and emotional state
Acute necrotising ulcerative gingivitis is an infection that manifests itself during periods of acute emotional distress (anxiety) or other health disorders. There is a decrease in defences accompanied by an increase in certain microbial species, especially ‘spirochetes’. It is very common in students during exam periods, when experiencing strong emotions due to the loss of a loved one, or other situations accompanied by peaks of anxiety.
It is usually a painful episode that is temporary: it lasts several days but is reversible. As for its cure, it requires medical treatment (antibiotics, antiseptics, painkillers and anti-inflammatories) accompanied by specialised dental treatment. Our periodontists in Bilbao will diagnose you and recommend the best treatment.
