Aesthetic periodontal microsurgery

Aesthetic periodontal microsurgery
This procedure involves a series of corrections to deformities that occur in the gums as a result of various destructive events (hyperplastic gingivitis, periodontitis), traumatic events (avulsion, trauma) or tooth extractions that reduce tissue volume.
These microsurgical procedures aim to correct deviations that alter the shape of the soft tissues that surround the smile (the gums, in colloquial terms). The ideal relationship between the tooth and its gum is when the gum covers the entire root of the tooth, but without covering the enamel or exposing the root.
All these solutions are performed using microsurgical techniques, which involves the use of magnifying lenses or dental microscopes, instruments specially designed for minimally invasive procedures, and extremely fine sutures. This results in greater predictability of treatments and optimal post-operative care for the patient.

Types of gummy smiles
According to the scientific community, a ‘normal’ smile allows 2 mm of gum to be visible in a normal smile, but there are two ‘types’ of smile that do not meet this standard and which we treat at our dental clinic in Bilbao:
Gummy smile
A smile in which the gums are more visible than the teeth. Treatment consists of reducing the amount of exposed smile by removing excess gum tissue, also known as ‘gingivectomy’, although there are exceptions depending on the origin of the problem.
Recesión gingival
This refers to the exposure of the tooth root due to the migration of the gum line. It is not a pathology in itself, and does not mean that the future of the tooth is at risk (unless it is accompanied by loss of bone support for the tooth). When the patient wants to correct this ‘long teeth’ appearance, or has hypersensitivity to cold, or there is not enough gum to protect the tooth, a gum augmentation procedure is performed on those teeth by placing a graft from the patient’s own palate mucosa.
