Gum infection and its treatment

The most common treatments in periodontics are related to gum infection.

Periodontal disease (gingivitis or inflammation of the gums and pyorrhea or periodontitis) is an infection caused by bacteria or microbes that we all have in our mouths. Therefore, its treatment will be aimed at eliminating the infection and eliminating or reducing the risk factors or predisposing factors for re-infection.

Instruction

The first part of the treatment consists of motivating and instructing the patient on hygiene measures. In short, how to brush your teeth more effectively, eliminating the bacteria that all humans accumulate on a daily basis. Bacterial plaque, which is the direct cause of periodontal disease and other oral pathologies, doubles in just 12 hours, and its correct and regular removal prevents both periodontal disease and tooth decay.

Removal

The second part of the treatment will be aimed at eliminating periodontal infection, whether gingivitis (when it only affects the gum compartment) or periodontitis (when it affects the tissues supporting the tooth, i.e. the bone as well as the gum). To do this, under local anaesthetic, the bacterial deposits accumulated on the surface of the tooth root below the gum will be removed using specially designed instruments called curettes. The treatment is known as curettage or scaling and root planing.

Assessment

The third part after periodontal anti-inflammatory treatment will be a periodontal evaluation or periodontogram to confirm that the infection has healed. If the periodontitis has not healed because the infection is very deep or because there are areas that are difficult to maintain for both the patient and the professional, advanced periodontal treatment will be necessary.

Regenerative periodontal treatment

Advanced periodontal treatment involves removing deep bacterial deposits to completely cure the infection. This is done through microsurgery, which aims to access the source of the infection and create favourable conditions for establishing adequate hygiene measures.

At our dental clinic in Bilbao, we perform regenerative periodontal treatment for those patients with lesions with vertical or circumferential bone defects. The aim of this treatment, in addition to eradicating the infection and thereby improving the prognosis or long-term survival of the tooth, is also performed in some complex cases of dental implants by our dental implantologist.
