Lengthening of short teeth

The natural size of teeth varies from person to person. An attractive smile is defined as one in which the colour of the enamel predominates over that of the gums. However, different factors can cause the opposite to be true, with little enamel and a lot of gum visible. This is known as a ‘gummy smile’ and short teeth, where excess gum tissue covers part of the enamel of the teeth when smiling. It is particularly common in young patients who have completed orthodontic treatment.

In cases where there is excess gum tissue covering the enamel, treatment to make the teeth appear longer (gingivectomy) restores the original size of the teeth and enhances the appearance of the enamel in the smile. It is a very simple procedure performed under local anaesthesia, which is quick and painless: painkillers are rarely necessary and sutures are only occasionally required.

The results are immediate, and patients enjoy a more aesthetic smile from the very first appointment.
